Abstract

This paper aims to suggest a specific action plan based on understanding cognitive writing theory. According to cognitive writing theory, writing is process of composition of meaning, and the problem-solving with various strategies for writing. Every process is also dynamically and recursively performed by adjustment and modification. Cognitive writing theory has provided us with new views on writing education. We, under the influence of cognitive writing theory, have emphasized that first, anyone can be main agents of composition of meaning, second, writing education should be conducted by process of writing rather than the result of writing, and third, various strategies for writing should be utilized in order to improve the ability of writing. The theory, on the other hand, has obvious limits that it excessively emphasizes fragmentary skill in writing, neglects context, excludes writer’s affective features, and regards text as the product as careless. This study addresses the peculiarities of cognitive writing theory and educational limits, and seeks its educational possibilities. To be more concrete, I suggest several specific action plans for writing education, these are as follows: first of all, ‘creating the content by reading the text produced so far,’ ‘analysing the writing tasks by self-questioning,’ ‘checking process of writing by think-aloud method,’ and ‘making my own writing strategies and availing oneself of them.’
