Abstract

This article looks at recent trends in secondary writing instruction in the United States with regard to technology integration by reviewing the existing studies and practices. This article has focused in particular on the efforts to connect in- and out-of-school writings through various digital tools. First, three related premises, which provide a rationale for making such efforts urgent and imperative, are elicited from research on the current situation of writing instruction in the digital age. Second, how the new standards and assessments that are used on a national level support technology integration in writing instruction is reviewed. Third, a few typical examples of the integration of digital tools as well as opportunities and challenges in secondary writing instruction are explored. Finally, lessons and implications from the U.S. trends are discussed for Korean writing education.
