Abstract
In most of the ancient dynasties the unfertile men worked as servants in the royal court because they were not able to cause the women to become pregnant. They were called ‘eunuchs’. This essay takes notice of their growing influential political roles and finds this phenomenon especially occurring in the Later Roman Empire and the Later Han. In 2009, the German ancient historian Prof. Dettenhofer made the first comparative study of the court eunuchs in Roman and ancient Chinese times. In this essay the writer will develop the pioneering study by Dettenhofer, in particular by focusing on the “personal network of the eunuchs”. Generally the eunuchs maintained intimate relations with the three main powerful groups: the emperor, court officials and the court women. This paper treats with the first example, the relations with the emperor. In the background of the political power of the eunuchs we can see the stable support and the trust of the emperor. The basic starting point of the comparative study lies in the period of the child emperors, in which the eunuchs in both empires became powerful groups. On the basis of it three examples of Later Han and one example of Rome will be compared. Then the political roles of the eunuchs in the period of adult emperors should be examined. For this comparison two examples each of Later Han and Rome will be found and we may discover in which conditions or situations the eunuchs became politically powerful in the royal court. Resulting from this study we know firstly the fact that the eunuchs in both empires commonly took political chances and became influential in politics under the periods when there were child emperors. Differences are also found: In Later Han the jeopardization of the power of the emperor was the cause of the intervention of the eunuchs in the politics of the time, while the eunuchs in the Roman empire used the rule of the under-aged emperor for their own purposes. In the period of the adult emperors two examples of each in both empires are found in which the eunuchs intervened in politics. The two examples of the Later Han and one example of Rome are all related with imperial power. Only one example, the case of Theodosius II, namely, his relationship with the eunuch Chrysaphius has another character. His political intervention was caused by his own ambition and he capitalized on the weak character of the emperor Theodosius II for his political aims. In both empires the court eunuchs were very politically able and they knew so well, how they could use the emperor. They knew the palace itself very well too. The Roman eunuchs Eutropius and Chrysaphius were good examples of this. If chances were given they used them and could even eradicate their rivals too. They were the court eunuchs who served the emperor in close proximity. That means evidently that the eunuchs were also at the same time very near to the center of power.
