초록

본고에서는 고대제국에서 자주 등장하는 정치세력화한 환관들과 그들이 주로 궁내에서의 입지를 보강하고 정치적 목적을 달성하기 위해 접촉했던 한 주요세력인 궁내의 여인들의 관계를 다룬다. 사회구조와 궁의 체제가 매우 상이하긴 하지만 고대 로마와 중국의 후한왕조에서 이러한 환관들과 궁내 여인들의 긴밀한 정치적 관계가 있었음에 주목하여 비교연구를 시도하였다. 우선 환관들이 궁내에서 접촉했던 여인들의 부류를 설정하고 비교를 위해 두 가지 점에 주목했다. 첫째는 양 제국에서 공히 드러나는 황제권과 황조(皇朝)의 유지를 위한 차원에서의 양측 즉 환관과 궁내 여인들의 관계를 다루고, 두 번째로 현실정치의 속성을 잘 보여주는 환관의 개인적인 목적을 위한 양자의 관계를 다루었다. 이를 통해 규명이 되는 환관과 궁내 여인들간의 관계의 핵심이 결국은 양자의 궁에서의 실리를 위한 것이고 이를 위해 양측은 공조하고 협력하기도 했지만, 결정적으로는 등을 돌리기도 했고, 적대적이 되는 경우도 양 제국에서 공히 나타남을 알게 된다. 즉 환관이 정치세력화 하면서 결국 이들을 움직인 것은 근본적으로 그들의 사적인 이해관계가 더 컸음을 알게 해주는 것이다.

Abstract

This thesis treats with the political eunuchs and their contacted court women in ancient empires. Although social structure and court system were very different in both empires, Roman and Hou Han empires, this comparative study was made because of the intimate political relations between court eunuchs and women. At first the study shows all the types of court women in both ancient empires. Then the two criteria were selected for the comparative approach. The first one was that the relations between eunuchs and women were made for the purpose of keeping the imperial power or the dynasty itself. The second one focuses on the private goal of eunuchs in the relations with the court women. The latter illuminates the character of "real politic". From this comparative study we can conclude the key point of the relations between eunuchs and women in the imperial court. It is the "private interest". In both empires Hou Han and Rome the eunuchs and women were frequently cooperative and planned important matters together, but the cordial relations did not continue for a long time. In many times eunuchs betrayed the women and women did so too. In both ancient empires the court eunuchs became more politically influential groups. The main motive that led them so was surely their private interest and political ambitions.
