Abstract
There is increasing number of offenders with mental illness in the community, and their recidivism rate is relatively high compared to general offenders In addition, the felony crime rate of mentally ill offenders is approximately five times higher than that of all offenders. While police intervention for offenders with mental illness is increasing, previous studies only provided theories and case studies from other countries. In particular, there is a lack of empirical research on the police who encounter people with mental illness on the front lines. Thus, this study aims to conduct the focus group interview to further investigate the experience of the police with mentally ill offenders in various dimensions. As a result of the analysis, three sub-themes were derived in this study: ‘immaturity and complex emotions’, ‘predicted failures and stress’, and ‘systematic approach and cooperation’. Based on the results of this study, the policy and practical implications was discussed for the police to work with offender with mental illness.
