Abstract

Aniconism is known as one of the most important characteristics of Yahwism. This study, however, shows that there were aniconic traditions in the ancient Near East before the rise of ancient Israel. Akhenaten, king of Egypt in the 14th century BCE, removed the statues of all traditional Egyptian deities and represented the god Aten only in the form of the sun disc. In Mesopotamia in the first millennium, the statues of the deities were replaced by their symbols. The divine footprints on the court of the Ain Dara Temple in northern Syria exhibit an interesting case of aniconic development. The evidence of Israelite aniconism is masseboth or standing stones. Apparently, not all masseboth were representations of deities. Some of those which were used formerly as boundary markers may have been turned into representations of deities as can be seen in the example of masseboth at Arad. The aniconic movements that appeared occasionally in the ancient Near East may have opened up the possibility for aniconic tradition in ancient Israel. In addition, the spread of literacy and the shift from the religion of images to the religion of the Torah during the 8-7th centuries BCE may have contributed to the emergence of the aniconism found in Yahwism.
