Abstract
Peter was the most important disciple of Jesus and played a major role in the establishment and administration of the Church in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, he has been undervalued compared to Paul because modern theology has focused on Paul. Those scholars who were influenced by the Tübingen School have considered his speeches in the Acts of the Apostles to be later fiction. In the 1950s, Cullmann argued that such an assessment of Peter was fundamentally wrong. He asserted that Peter was the most important person in the development of primitive Christianity and theology, and he was not a spokesman of the Jewish people but an open-minded mediator between Judaizers and Paul. Since then many researchers have been trying to re-evaluate Peter's role and theology. As referring to these studies, this article attempts to study the missionary works of Peter and re-examine his role in early Christianity. The following conclusions are obtained. First, the Law-free mission to the Gentiles was started by Philip, not by Paul. While the conservatives of Jerusalem rejected the Law-free mission, Peter actively supported the attitude of Philip. The Law-free mission to the Gentiles was able to be accepted by Christians through the efforts of Peter. Second, Peter took the initiative in the Antioch church, and then he was extensively engaged in missionary activities throughout Asia. There were many Christian believers in Asia. This is confirmed by the statements of Plinius in 112. Finally, Peter worked in Rome for several years, and he was martyred in Rome. There are many researchers who deny that Peter was active in Rome, but it is clear that he carried on his missionary work in Rome. This fact is confirmed by the records of Clemens and Ignatius.
