미국 대학의 ‘학문적 정직성’ 정책에 대한 연구 －대학 글쓰기에서의 ‘표절’ 문제를 중심으로－

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to review and suggest the prescription and policy of ‘academic honesty’ or ‘academic integrity’ through the problem of ‘plagiarism’ in college writing in the U.S. universities. This essay mainly discuss plagiarism principles, prescriptions, and plagiarism policy as academic honesty or academic integrity in focusing on examples of several U.S. universities. Plagiarism means using another's ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information. It is very important that we give credit where it is due. we must put others' words in quotation marks and cite their source(s) and must give citations when using others' ideas, even if those ideas are paraphrased in our own words. Moreover, it is very important to understand that unauthorized collaboration in many forms besides writing assignment(art, music, computer code, mathematics, and scientific work) is also plagiarism. This essay pays special attention to the ‘academic honesty’ policy in the U.S. universities. The U.S. universities have effectively put their academic honesty policy into practice, and operated honor system to prevent students plagiarism for a long time. Therefore, through re- searching academic honesty policy in college culture and writing system of U.S. universities, we will anticipate to provides adequate opportunity in establishing ‘honor code’ or ‘ethics code’, and in promoting academic honesty in Korean universities.
