Abstract

Asklepios is known as the god of healing personal illness through sleeping rituals. So it has been understood that the epidemic in the last quarter of the fifth century was the cause for the introduction of the god to Athens. But Athens was then going through a complex political situation fighting the Peloponnesian Wars; hence the god was also forced to have a complex character. This personality can be recognized especially through inscriptions. Athens appears to have introduced the gods to guard against its northern rival Thebes and its southern rival Epidauros. From Thebes, a mantic hero named Amphiaraus was brought in, turned into a healing god, and a sanctuary was built for him in Oropos. Recognizing that it was impossible to hold complete control of the Oropos, a sanctuary a little southward in Rhamnous was built in addition. Epidauros was a very important city because it was on the way to Peloponnese. Athens brought in Asklepios from there to build a sanctuary in Peiraieus and then a sanctuary in the southern slopes of the Acropolis so that it can be rooted deeply in the center. They were introduced to Athens around 420 B.C., and their positions were once again strengthened during the reform of Lykourgos in the late 4th century B.C. In particular, Lykourgos introduced torch racing to Peiraieus and Rhamnous while reforming the training of the Ephebes. It contains not only the message that the land is protected over night but also that it will be purified by fire. It is a political act with a will to purify and protect the land at the border where healing gods are firmly rooted. As such, it would be reasonable to regard the healing gods as political figures who protect Athens not only from epidemics but also from military attacks.
