Abstract
This paper aims to know whether the ‘media personalization’, which was the common phenomenon of western democracies in recent decades, appeared in South Korea’s election coverage. To this aim, I analyzed newspaper editorials related to presidential candidates including Park Geun-hye, Moon Jae-in, and Ahn Chul-su in the 2012 presidential election. The ‘media personalization’ refers to two related phenomena: a stronger focus on candidates/politicians at expense of parties and institutions (individualization); and a change in the criteria for the evaluation of politicians, from features regarding their professional competence to features concerning non-political personality traits (privatization). It was found that the ratio of the individualization coverages was twice more than that of party-focused coverages, and that the ratio of the privatization coverages was 73.5%. And media personalization was common in South Korea’s election coverage regardless of the political bias of newspapers. In addition, I analyzed the impact of the in-party competition to nominate candidates for the election on the degree of the media personalization, considering the hypothesis that the change of political institution such as in-party competition influences the media contents. It was found that the hypothesis that individualization coverage was found most frequently at the in-party competition stage was applicable to Park Geun-hye’ case, but it did not deal well with Moon Jae-in’s case. This findings may suggest that the difference between candidates as well as political institutions will influence the media personalization.
