Abstract
Marriage migrant women experience higher rates of domestic violence compared to native residents. Despite the essential function of these shelters —particularly considering the limited social capital of marriage migrant women— the number of residents has been declining in recent years. The purpose of this study is to seek ways to improve migrant women’s shelters by focusing on the vivid voices of married immigrant women who have actually lived in these shelters. In-depth interviews were conducted with six migrant women, and the self-determination theory was utilized as a framework for qualitative data analysis to shed light on the choices and actions that stem from the self-determination of these migrant women. The findings reveal that diminished autonomy, unmet needs for competence, and hierarchical or unstable relationships within the shelter context hinder motivation to remain in the facility. Based on these results, the study proposes improvements including the expansion of budget categories and eligibility criteria, enhancement of physical shelter environments, and reinforcement of mandatory training for shelter staff. Ultimately, this study contributes by proposing improvements to migrant women’s shelters systematically, while opening space for a critical reconsideration of the vulnerability frame and provider-centered approaches in migration policy.
