초록

In this paper, I argue Augustus formulated his Principate using the ideas expressed in Cicero’s De Re Publica. In general, Cicero and Augustus are known as the representatives of conflicting political systems, that is, the Res Publica and the Principate, respectably. As in the slogans, S.P.Q.R or ‘Concordia ordinum’ which well represented his political attitudes and beliefs, he belonged to the Optimates and thought a political system controlled by a senate was the best one. On the other hand Augustus was the founder of the Principate and the first Roman emperor who heralded in the Pax Romana. He proudly stated that “---in my thirteenth consulship, the senate and the equestrian order and the entire Roman people gave me the title of Father of my Country”. However, the ideas ‘a guardian of libertas’, ‘tota Italia’, and ‘princeps civitatis’ in Res Gestae Divi Augusti appear to have been influenced by Ciceronian political thoughts in his De Re Publica. In sum, I contend that Augustus made full use of these ideas and justified the Augustan Principate as a monarchy.
