Abstract
This thesis will investigate the understanding of Yahweh of ancient Israel by comparing epithets between El, Baal of Ugarit and Yahweh of ancient Israel. Epithets are compact and obvious expressions that show one’s recognition and understanding for the subject, and God’s epithets are useful and important materials for the understanding of God. Though each of Canaanite religion reflected in Ugaritic materials as a polytheism and ancient Israelite religion as a monotheism had a totally different religion system, latecomer ancient Israel seems to have accepted, modified the existing Canaanite religion and combined with Yahwism properly. Ancient Israel refused Ugarit’s polytheistic understanding of gods, but used and integrated Ugaritic images, motifs, and epithets into their own religion. Furthermore, ancient Israelite religion shows that their God has connected with His own people(the Isralites) very closely and intervened deeply in their history more than in Canaanite religion.
