Abstract

This article aims to look into the characteristics of plain potteries by re-organizing the outcome of studies on plain coarse potteries of Neolithic Age in North Korea, which had begun to be dealt between 1950s and 1960s. This work will play a part in advancing related researches on plain coarse potteries of Neolithic Age. Since a series of excavations on Goonsan-ri site in 1950s Noth Korean scholars had became attentive to plain coarse potteries other than comb pattern potteries. Later on, in the process of organizing outcome of excavations on Gitap-ri),Geumtan-ri, Namgyung site, they accomplished a great deal in study on plain coarse potteries of Neolithic Age. According to their outcome of researches, since excavation of Googsan-ri it has been found that there was difference between plain potteries and comb pattern potteries in using raw materials. Even when same raw materials were used,different mixture was adopted in making process. There was distinction between plain potteries and comb pattern potteries in raw materials or mixture of raw materials. Since Jitap-ri excavation, it was pointed out that although the bottom was circle-shaped as in comb pattern potteries, in almost all of relics was flat-shaped bottom found, which was different from comb pattern potteries. At the conclusion, since excavation of Geumtan-ri, it has been reported that there were no big pots like comb pattern potteries, and that wall of potteries thinner than comb pattern potteries. As shown above, differences in raw material,type, size seems to associate with differences in technological and functional properties, which allows us to assume that each pottery was used for many different purposes depending on the variety. In Gyong-gi region a lot of plain coarse potteries have recently been unearthed,but few researches have been made so far. However, from various excavation sites, plain coarse potteries have been excavated together with comb pattern pottery attracting scholars attention. These potteries have some different characteristics from comb pattern potteries in type, size, raw material that North Korean Scholars pointed out. Accordingly, plain potteries Middle-western area covering Deadong River seem to have important roles in pottery culture of Neolithic Age.
