이 논문은 고대 아테네에서 매우 중요했던 판아테나이아 축제의 변화 양상과 그 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 판아테나이아 축제는 아테네에서 오랜 기간 동안 유지 발전되어 온 축제 중 하였으며, 시기에 따라 끊임없는 변화를 거듭하였다. 초기에 판아테나이아 축제는 아테네 생일을 기준으로 하여 하루 정도 행해졌던 축제였으나, 기원전 6세기 경 규모가 커지기 시작했다. 이때부터 기존 축제는 매년 행해지는 소 판아테나이아 축제로 자리매김했으며, 4년마다 한 번씩 행해지는 대 판아테나이아 축제가 신설되었다. 대 판아테나이아 축제가 확립되고 규모가 대폭 확대된 시기는 페이시스트라토스가 정권을 잡았던 때였다. 이 시기에 대 판아테나이아에는 몇 가지 운동 경기와 연령별 운동 경기, 음악 경연 등이 새롭게 생겨났다. 이 시기에 만들어진 운동 경기는 무장하고 달리는 호플리테스와 전차 경주였던 시노리스 등이었다. 또한 운동 경기에 참여하는 연령 그룹을 세분화했다. 일반적으로 장년부와 소년부로 나누어 치러지던 제전이 장년부, 수염이 자라지 않은 청년부, 소년부로 구분되었다. 마지막으로 이 시기에는 운동경기 이외에도 음악 경연이나 호메로스 서사시 암송 대회 등이 개최됨으로써 축제의 프로그램이 다채로워졌을 것이다. 참주정 시기에 대 판아테나이아 의례가 변화하고 규모가 확대된 것은 그 시기 정치적, 사회적 변화와 맞물려 있다고 할 수 있다. 무력을 통해 참주가 된 페이시스트라토스는 정권의 정당성을 확보하기 위해 다양한 노력을 기울였으며, 시민들의 호응과 인기를 얻고자 했다. 또한 솔론의 개혁 이후 페이시스트라토스 집권까지 혼란했던 아테네를 하나로 묶을 필요가 있었을 것이다. 그러한 상황 속에서 판아테나이아 축제에 대한 관심은 가장 효과적인 방법이었을 것이다.
Abstract
The paper first addresses changes of the Great Panathenaia during the tyranny era. The Panathenaia occurred every year at first. In the 6th century B.C., reorganization of the Panathenaia was provavly inspired by the development of the penteteric festivities. Those festivity are universally described as "the Great Panathenaia". Several developments of the Great Panathenaia do belong to the tyranny era. In this time, several sports game newly were organized, such as the hoplites, the foot-race in armor, and the synoris, chariot race. In addition, participants of games were categorized according to age: boys, men and beardless youths. lastly, musical contests and a contest for rhapsodes were organized for the first time. Why was developed and extended the Great Panathenaia during the time? Peisistratos attained power by force of arms, so he carried out policies to unite and win popularity with its citizens. he paid more attention to it under those circumstances, because of the most efficient way. Furthermore, it played a key role in improving the reputation of Athene and Peisistratos.
