Abstract

This article studies how divinity, human, and votive offerings were connected and communicated through the dedicatory statues in the Archaic sanctuaries in Delos and Samos, and examines how religious reciprocity was realized. The Archaic period is when the use of the Greek alphabet flourished, by which inscriptions started to appear on large dedicatory statues commissioned by noble families. These dedicatory statues which served as gifts to please the gods were generally set as narrators. By personifying statues, the artifact became an entity with divine power as opposed to being a simple lump of marble or bronze, translating the desires of the dedicator into the language of the gods, and acting as a mediator of the religious relationship between the two. The bronze statuette of Mantiklos commends the religiousness of the dedicator while mediating the religious transaction between god and man by delivering the desires of the dedicator. Euthykartides dedicated an innovative large-scale statue to the gods and borrowed the “voice” of the artifact to emphasize his own capabilities and dedication as a sculptor. Kore of Nikandre praises her and her household’s greatness in place of Nikandre to show that she is deserving of the favors of the gods. Through the overwhelming height of the sculpture, inscriptions and its location within the temple, Kouros of Samos impressed the gods and men who visited the Heraion in Samos, regarding the heroic acts of Isches and his household The dedicatory statues of Cheramyes and the statuary group of Geneleos in the same temple indicated that dedications expanded in quantity. Furthermore, the inscriptions on the statuary group revealed that the statues were both a votive offering to the gods and a medium that declares the identity of the dedicator to the gods. The dedicatory statues and inscriptions confirm that the religious relationships between gods and men were reciprocal in nature. As these dedicatory statues – where religious reciprocity is revealed – were exhibited in the pan-hellenic sanctuaries, the witnesses of religious intimacy (i.e. gods and men) were summoned.
