Abstract

This thesis aims to open the possibility of a new interpretation of 'martyrdom and prayer' out of the existing frame of understanding of 'resistance and conformity' by analyzing the texts related to prayer and prayer for the emperor of ancient Christianity and revealing the religious-political dimension. Existing trends in the study of religious and political relations between the Roman Empire and the Christianity in the first and second centuries have identified martyrdom as resistance and prayer as compliance in relation to the Roman Empire's persecution. However, I believe that among the church's reactions to the Roman Empire, prayer for the state and the emperor is understood as conformity and harmony because of the dichotomy of the state and the church. The results of analyzing six documents so far show that prayer for the emperor is not simply a submissive attitude resulting from the avoidance of persecution and coercion, but the political structure and power system of this world in the big picture of God's will and plan. As part of looking and realizing God's will, we pray for the country and the emperor. So, while martyrdom is the most heroic death, an extreme expression of the sublime faith, while prayer for the emperor and the state is the cowardly, submissive appearance of weak Christians in the face of fear, anxiety, and conflict? According to Heinz Kohut's “the principle of affectivity,” faith is the experience of a sense of unity that a believer favored by God gains in respect of God. Therefore, even in extreme hardships they are not overwhelmed by a feeling of fear, but rather creative energy springs up from within. Therefore, the symbolic system is the power to alleviate or circumvent anxiety, fear, and conflict. Eventually, not only martyrs who sacrifice their lives, but also prayers made with whole heart for emperor and the nation can also be integrated through the symbolic system of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Therefore, both martyrdom in the face of persecution and prayers for the emperor in a terrorist politics, all are holy acts that receive the high will of God in the symbolic system of suffering and resurrection on the cross. It is a skewed, superficial understanding, therefore, looking back at Romans 13, it is clear that this text has been misused as an ideology that implicitly compelled the church to take a pro-state position, as L. von Ranke and O. Culman evaluated. They who have been such criticized, are also literally and superficially. As a matter of course, it is not that fear or anxiety about torture dominates over death, but a field full of creative energy that realizes God's will for all people to be saved and reach the truth. This is not a rationalization of the weak in front of death, and it is not a negative result of the religious belief in separating the world from God, but rather that the immediate physical loss that holds the world in God's heart is used by the eternal plan of God. It is a voluntary response to a divine call.
