Abstract
The first aim of this article is to suggest that it was before the beginning of the Aegean ceramic period MMIII (1700 B.C.-) when Cecrops(Κέκροψ), who came from the town of Sais in Egypt became the Athenian king. For this purpose, first of all, Herodotus (8.44.2) will be analyzed: “The Athenians, while the Pelasgians (Πελασγοί) ruled what is now called Hellas, were Pelasgians, bearing the name of Cranai. When Cecrops was their king they were called Cecropidae.” The second aim is to suggest that he established the tradition of the royal house of Athens. Ancient Greek authors state that Cecrops had the goddess Athena as his patron deity. Especially, Kharax of Pergamum states that “Cecrops, coming from the town of Sais in Egypt colonized Athens. Sais according to the Egyptians, is said Athena(Σάϊς δὲ κατʼ Αἰγυπτίους ἡ Ἀθηνᾶ λέγεται).” On the basis of Kharax, Martin Bernal derived Ἀθηνᾶ(Goddess Athena) from Ḥt nṯr (nt) Nt (‘sacred city (of) (the goddess) Neit’), the religious name of Sais (Egyptian divinities were frequently referred to by their dwellings). The two features of Cecrops, one as a king of Egyptian origin and the other as a king with the goddess Athena as his patron deity, ended when Cranaus and Amphictyon, who were not Egyptians, became kings of Athens immediately after Cecrops. However, the features continued when Erechthonius, an Egyptian, became the king of Athens, and continued through Erechtheus until the time of the Dorian invasion, becoming a tradition of the royal family of Athens.
