Abstract
This study investigates how Korean news audience's exposure to foreign news report on Korea influences their presumed foreign attention on Korea, which, in turn, affects their national pride. Based on a critical literature review of foreign news media usage, foreign news exposure is classified into both direct exposure (i.e., the audience's exposure to foreign news based on their own selection) and indirect exposure (i.e., the audience's exposure to foreign news cited by local media). Additionally, this study divides national pride into two types: domain-specific national pride, which pertains to politics, economics, culture, and other domains, and general national pride. Results revealed that the Korean news audience's direct exposure to foreign news reports on Korea increases their presumed foreign attention on Korea, which in turn influences both domain-specific and general national pride. However, the audience's indirect exposure to foreign news does not affect their presumed foreign attention on Korea, nor does it influence either domain-specific or general national pride. This study expands the scope of journalism studies by examining how foreign news media influences the perception of the local news audience regarding their own country. It empirically supports the notion that Korean perceptions of foreign attention on Korea serve as an important factor contributing to national pride in Korea.
