Abstract

This paper studies the personal network of Pliny the Younger contained in the Letters, dividing it into equal friendship, non-equal friendship(patron-protégé relationship), and patron-client relationships. The relationships classified into three types are not treated with similar weight within the Letters. The Letters primarily serves as evidence of friendship within the Roman upper class. To use a Roman expression, it largely contains the world of amicitia. It also contains fragments of patrocinium, or what this study sought to classify as patron-client relationships, but the number of related letters is not large. In particular, the traces of the issue of patrocinium regarding individuals are so faint that it is safe to say that it was not the main concern of the Letters. Aside from fleeting glimpses of a patron-client relationship that Pliny the Younger might have formed with his freedmen, aspects of the relationship primarily concern Pliny the Younger as patronus for the community. Compared to patron-client relationships, the world of friendship gives the impression that it is based on an egalitarian nature rather than a hierarchical nature of human relationships in terms of language, but it has not lost its hierarchical nature. Although it is not expressed as explicitly as in patron-client relationships, a more hierarchical rather than egalitarian character is clearly sensed in the exchanges between upper-class figures who show significant differences in terms of career experience and age. Friendship of such a nature is frequently captured among the so-called ‘friends’ that appear in Pliny the Younger’s Letters. However, such a relationship is not permanently and absolutely distinct from a relationship of equal friends. There is some fluidity between the two categories. Moreover, the relationship between the two types of friendship often shows aspects of working together rather than operating separately from each other. The Letters contains a moment when Pliny the Younger pursued cooperation with friends in a network of equal friendship while providing support to the younger generation that followed him. Of course, considering the existence of the emperor, who was the ultimate patron, the friendship activities between upper-class figures during the imperial times, whether it was the patronage of a high-ranking political official or senator or the followership of an upper-class young man at the beginning of his political career, were bound to be located within the larger framework of non-equal friendship seeking the emperor's support.
