Abstract
Objects: The promoter gene has been regarded as a candidate for genetic involvement in mood disorders owing to its role in serotonergic neurotransmission and the mechanisms of action of antidepressants. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the polymorphism of the promoter region of serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) would be associated with major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder in the context of a genetic association study. Methods: A 44 base pair deletion/insertion polymorphism in 5-HTTLPR was examined in 77 major depressive patients, 71dysthymic patients and 140 healthy controls. Results: There was no significant difference in allele or genotype frequency between major depressive patients and control subjects. And there was also no difference between dysthymic patients and control subjects. In addition, we did not find significant difference of genotype and allele frequency between major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorders. Conclusion: These results suggest that the 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms seem not to play a role in the genetic susceptibility to major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder.
