Abstract
Objectives: Quantified Electroencephalography(QEEG) has been widely used to examine the electrophysiological disturbance in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), particularly with respect to increased slow wave activity and reduced fast wave activity. On the basis of these aspects, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of Methylphenidate(MPH) on QEEG in ADHD children by comparison of QEEG before and 1 hour after administration of MPH. Methods: The subjects that entered this study were 15 children (14 boys and 1 girls) who were diagnosed as ADHD by DSM-IV at department of psychiatry of Kyunpook National University Hospital and Baek's psychiatry clinic. We examined the Quantified Electroencephalography(QEEG) activity 1 hour after administration of MPH and compared these results with those of QEEG activity before administration of MPH. Results: 1) In central(T4) and posterior(Cp1, Cp2, P3, Po1, Po2, O1, Oz, O2) area, they showed statistically significant decreased absolute delta1(δ1) activity(P<0.05) 1 hour after administration of MPH, compared to the results before administration of MPH. 2) In central(C4) area, they showed statistically significant decreased absolute delta2(δ2) activity(P<0.05) 1 hour after administration of MPH, compared to the results before administration of MPH. 3) In anterior(F3) area, they showed statistically significant decreased absolute beta(β)2 activity 1 hour after administration of MPH, compared to the results before administration of MPH. Conclusion: The results in this study predict partly the hypothesis that Methylphenidate can manifest its effect on their symptoms by reversing increased slow wave activity and reduced fast wave activity in ADHD children.
