Abstract

This paper attempts at new perspective about the aspect of transformation in early phase pottery during Neolithic era in southern part of Korean peninsula. The study identifies chronological sequence of the pottery culture in the earlyㆍfirst phase. Then, I categorize the group of the pottery in transition period by examining untypical elements which have considered as unpredictable factors in the earlyㆍfirst phase. The characteristic of the transition in earlyㆍfirst phase pottery is examined to see if it contains the aspect of continuity or not. It shows not only the continuous flow (pattern 1, pattern 2ㆍ3ㆍ5) but also the discontinuous shift (pattern 4, pattern 6) in the transition period. It concludes that flow of the transition in earlyㆍfirst phase pottery is expected to have continuous as well as discontinuous factors. In this light, it is believed that discontinuous transition was showed up in the fraction of the potteries while the inclination of continuity widely occurred. After observing combination of the tool assemblages in the phases, the change in combination of tool assemblages is considered as association with transition of the pottery culture in the same period. Consequently, transition from the early phase to the first in southern part of Korean peninsula is believed to proceeding with gradual shift not only in pottery but also in general aspect of culture including combination of the tool assemblages.
