Abstract

This study focused on the fact that Kim Sang-ok created modern Shijos, children’s poems, and modern poems together throughout the years of his creative activities. Putting a special focus on the fact that he published four collections of modern poems and two collections of children’s poems between his first collection of Shijos Chojeok(1947) and his second collection of Shijos 65 3-Line Poems(1973), the study demonstrated that his poetic experimentations with modern poems and children’s poems had close impacts on his renewal of modern Shijos. In his early years of creative activities, he made a distinction between his Shijos and modern poems by putting more efforts in rhymes for Shijos and images for modern poems. In addition to these form characteristics, there were also differences in his thematic consciousness as he emphasized certain topics more for certain genres. As time passed, however, differences in his thematic consciousness among different genres disappeared gradually. It is understood as his attempt at organizing his poetic world holistically with diverse genres instead of regarding certain genres as a process or foothold to make an achievement in other genres. He kept his attitude of respecting differences among different genres to the end, but evaluations of his poetic products have been inclined toward his Shijo works despite this effort of his. In fact, he made resistance in many different forms against the bias of the poetical circles for modern Shijos, calling a Shijo a “3-line poem.” Tracing his steps, the study raised a need for new reflection on the research trends of the academic circles on the poet. Kim Sang-ok created Shijos, children's poems, and verses simultaneously by respecting differences among the genres and achieved certain results. His poetic move offers a chance of reflection to the poetical and academic circles today whose barriers are rising high against the creation and research of Shijos, children’s poems, and verses.
