Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing the aspects of conflict and the framework of Doaenghaeng. Doaenghaeng is a classical novel about the conflict between two women Yu Baek-hi -Princess Yeongpyeong- and Jeong Wi-ju and a man named Ju Won-seong, the son of Ju Dang. Outwardly, the work takes the marriage impediment as a prime subject matter. But the discord might appear to be insignificant or might not seem to be emerging on the surface, as the discord does not develop surrounding the three main characters. So, this study looks into the aspects of discord in Doaenghaeng. First, the prime discord in Doaenghaeng comes not from the marriage impediment but from the “process of the two women's entry into the Ju family.” Second, the discord is created and promoted largely by Ju Dang, not by the people directly concerned in the marriage. So, this study pointed out that Ju Dang should be shed light on as a main character. In addition, this thesis explored the fundamentals of this discord. It concludes that sinwigun (a subject becomes the king) and saigun (to serve two different kings) at the bottom of the discord. Also, the discord in Doaenghaeng is closely related to the framework of the story. In the novel, the processes of the two women's entry into the Ju family are repeated in a parallel structure, which shows that there are two narratives that go through the same development of discord and the settlement. As mentioned above, this thesis has significance in that it examined the characteristics of Doaenghaeng through an earnest analysis of the aspects of discord and framework of the story, while exploring an aspect of the 18th century in the history of novel.
