초록
This essay aims to show that Arundhati Roy in The God of Small Things penetrates the multi-layered oppressive structures of colonialism, caste, gender, and globalization in Indian society, by revealing the formidable oppressions of the powerful dominant systems on the powerless and underprivileged in the margin. Roy attempts to subvert the 'big' public narratives of the dominant systems and restore the hidden 'small' stories of the powerless. For this purpose, Roy foregrounds the dangerous love between Ammu (an upper-class woman) and Velutha (an untouchable man) which is thoroughly subdued by the society since it transgresses the rigid boundaries set by social order. Moreover, she rewrites this forbidden love as a courageous and resistant act which threatens the dominant society. Thus, Roy's narrative achieves 'the narrative from below' which discloses the violent oppressions of the dominant society from the viewpoint of the margin and suggests the possibility of resisting them.
