초록

Objectives:We investigated the knowledge of psychiatric medications and referral patterns of school counselorsfor students with psychiatric problems. Methods:A total of 246 school counselors recruited in 2012 completed a survey to assess their knowledge ofpsychiatric medications and experience in making referrals for students with mental health problems. The survey includedsociodemographic data and a 5-item questionnaire on psychiatric medications. Results:Elementary school counselors made significantly fewer psychiatric referrals than did middle and high schoolcounselors. School counselors who had previous experience to contact the mentally ill were more likely to recommendpsychiatric treatment. Higher frequency of referral experience by school counselors was significantly associated withgreater acceptance of the referral by students. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that previous experienceto contact the mentally ill and knowledge of psychiatric medications were independently associated with frequencyof psychiatric referral. Internal barriers to psychiatric referral were associated with school counselors’ lack ofknowledge about psychiatric medications. Conclusion:Our findings suggest that knowledge of psychiatric treatment and the subjective experience of schoolcounsellors are associated with the frequency of psychiatric referrals for students with mental health problems. Programstargeting school counsellors that focus on these issues are required to increase psychiatric referrals in schools.
