정의에 따르면 하나의 형태소는 이형태들을 구성원으로 하는 범주이다. 한국어는 그 교착적 성격으로 인해 하나의 형태소가 환경에 따라 다양한 이형태로 교체하는 경우가 많다. 형태소라는 범주를 구성하는 구성원들인 이형태들의 관계도 꽤나 다양하다. 그런데 형태소들의 통시적 변천 과정에서 이형태들 간의 원형성 차이 및 가족닮음 관계를 상정하지 않고서는 설명하기 어려운 현상들이 발견된다. 이는 형태소가 이형태라는 표본(exemplar)으로 구성된 원형범주임을 암시한다.
Abstract
By the linguistic definition, a morpheme can be regarded as a category with its allomorph as its member. It holds in terms of cognitive nature of categorization, too. Owing to the heavily agglutinative character, there tends to be several allomorphs within a grammatical morpheme in Korean. Among diverse relations allomorphs exhibit, some show Prototypical Effects, and some are linked to each other via Family Resemblance relations. Moreover, there are some historical changes that would not be explained unless the morphemes in question were not prototypical categories with each allomorph being an exemplar, plus being linked to other allomporphs via Family Resemblance relations.
