Abstract
Inhye HanFoe, a rewrite of Robinson Crusoe, pursues the writing that manifests "the promise of fullness" by virtue of an intuition or the grace of divine revelation. In the first place, the two tasks are imposed on the Coetzee's rewrite. The first is to criticize the vantage point of Puritanism represented in the original work, and the second is to incorporate the very stance to achieve the intuitive understanding on the objects of the novel. Thus, Foe and Susan, who connotes the position of Puritans and that of anti-Puritans respectively, argue around the metaphysical issues, but any side fails to achieve the logical superiority. In spite of its purpose of the divine recognition, however, the constructive alternative which effectively criticizes the prejudiced ethics of Puritans is needed and it is propounded as the thought of Christian mysticism or immanentism. Coetzee's Foe, therefore, does not simply negate or reverse the original work, but rather dialectically develops it. In this sense, Foe correlates closely with the rewriting practices in the Medieval period since medieval writers regards the form of rewriting as the means and process for the divine creation. Coetzee's rewriting plays a role as a literary realm where the opposing hermeneutical horizons are reconciled and where the interpretative dimension of conflicts is transformed into that of empathetic and intuitive understanding.
