초록
Doris Lessing, who was blamed for her science fictions being too idealistic and mystic, tries to bring more of a scientific foundation to her work. In The Making of the Representative for Planet 8, the fourth book of Canopus in Argos series, she borrows concepts and principles from sociobiology and quantum theory to explore the meaning of death and extinction. The inhabitants in the colonized Planet 8 face an unexpected coming of the Ice Age and finally pass away. Lessing, however, concludes this work by suggesting that their representatives survive on another planet and are telling someone or some others about their unique experiences. This paper tries to interpret this conclusion by using sociobiological concepts such as genes and genomes, and quantum theory such as the Indeterminacy Principle and the Mass-Energy Equation Principle. That is, the representatives are considered to be metaphors for genes, and their survival means that they have successfully transferred their genetic information to their posterity, while the indeterminacy principle and the mass-energy equation principle show the possibility that the particles the representatives resolve into don't disappear completely but rather reappear by forming another matter-substance. This paper concludes that the death or extinction of the representatives is ‘a movement,’ ‘a transfer,’ or ‘a process.’
