초록
The aim of this study is to examine The Broken Earth trilogy consisting of The Fifth Season, The Gate of Obelisks, and The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemisin, exploring the healing of crisis-ridden societies through material turn. New Materialism transcends the boundaries of philosophy, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, shedding light on the world issues we face. New Materialism investigates the agency inherent in matter itself, surpassing language-centric and epistemological perspectives through material turn. Additionally, material turn provides practical ethics in response to geological environmental changes on Earth. The text diagnoses the problems of a society dominated by capital, an instrumental agent of performative ideology. It captures moments of collusion between reason and language that define the irrationality of Orogene and analyzes the process of Othering. Conquerors skillfully distort the history of the Other and subjugate humanity with highly developed scientific technology. The “Briar Patch” of the Syl Anagist society and the “Wire Chair” of the Sanze empire act as mechanisms of oppression against the Orogene with magic and power. However, the women in The Broken Earth trilogy go beyond mirroring new violence against violence but demonstrate transformative capabilities surpassing it. The “Briar Patch” and “Wire Chair” of the “Orogene” exist “beneath their skin,” and their “embodied sensibility” takes responsible agency for the “justice-to-come.”
