초록

This paper analyzes the nonlinear structure and complex relationships between characters in Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See through the concepts of ‘affection’ and ‘connection’ presented in the first and second part of Spinoza’s Ethics. Specifically, this paper interprets the protagonist Marie-Laure’s growth not as a process of acquiring social roles typical of traditional bildungsromans, but as a journey of ethical reflection and the pursuit of freedom through external affections. By doing so, the study highlights Marie-Laure’s progression toward the ultimate stage of knowledge as described in Spinoza’s philosophy, offering a new framework for reading the novel as a bildungsroman. This approach provides a deeper understanding of the work’s themes and character development by analyzing the protagonist’s experiences through Spinoza’s philosophical concepts. Consequently, this research expands existing interpretations of bildungsromans and contributes to exploring the intersection between literary works and philosophical thought.
