Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the meaning of writing and writing education in novels based on the ethics of authenticity. The formation of self-identity and self-understanding pursued in writing are in line with the ethics of authenticity, which is the orientation of the true inner self. This paper uses Taylor and Guignon’s theory of authenticity as its methodology, and the research subjects are Ku Byeong-mo’s Hostility and Choi Eun-young’s With a Very Faint Light. The criteria for analyzing the novels are the authenticity of self-expression, the authenticity of understanding others, and the authenticity of social responsibility. The first category deals with character who use writing as a means of self-expression. Writing about the life of an elderly person can easily lead to self-promotion, but unlike that, there was a character who expressed sincerity, and the self-awareness revealed in the essays written by a university lecturer in the past influenced the students. Second, the place where the authenticity of understanding others is revealed is the place of encounter with others centered on writing and writing education. The teacher and student who met in the writing class at the welfare center share more intimate emotions and help than family, and in the lecture room of the university where discussions about writing take place, individuals who each pursue their own authenticity communicate. Third, the authenticity of social responsibility is confirmed in the teacher-student relationship in the writing class, which is a special form of elderly care, and can be found in the lecturer and student who share the same wounds about the same place creating an opportunity for comfort through writing. This paper reveals that the writing classroom, which is the common setting of the two novels, is a place where authenticity is realized, and analyzes the fact that the characters pursue inner truth through writing and educational activities to clarify the value of implementing authenticity in literature.
