Abstract
This study aimed to translate and validate the Korean version of the Quality of Interaction (QI) scale, which measures the multidimensional aspects of leader-member exchange (LMX). We examined both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using the data sets of 150 and 307 working adults in Korea respectively. The results indicated the multidimensional nature of LMX, consisting of two factors; work-LMX relationship and social-LMX relationship. In addition, the QI was significantly correlated with two commonly used LMX scales (i.e., LMX7 and LMX-MDM), which supported the convergent validity. The results of confirmatory factor analyses showed that the QI is distinct from LMX7 and LMX-MDM, which supported the discriminant validity. In order to test the criterion-related validity, we conducted the hierarchical regression analyses. The subdimensions of QI were shown to be significantly related to job attitude and behavior. In particular, work-LMX relationship was positively related to task performance and job satisfaction, and social-LMX relationship was positively related to contextual performance. Therefore, these findings provided evidence that the Korean version of the QI scale is a reliable and valid measure for assessing the concept of multidimensional LMX in a Korean sample. The implications and the limitations of the study were discussed.
