Abstract
In recent years, while automobile manufacturers in South Korea have continued to grow, the performance of auto parts companies has steadily declined. This study addresses the research question: "When faced with performance threats, should automotive parts companies rely more on their existing customer relationships with auto manufacturers, or should they reduce their sales dependency by finding new buyers?" An empirical analysis was conducted on 116 domestic auto parts companies from 2005 to 2015. The findings suggest that as performance threats increase, domestic auto parts companies become more dependent on the auto manufacturers they are currently supplying. Additionally, the study examined the moderating effects of internationalization and organizational slack resources on the relationship between performance threats and dependency on current customers. This study reveals that while internationalization did not show a significant moderating effect, organizational slack resources weakened the impact of performance threats on their dependency on existing customers. This study provides important insights for stakeholders by examining the determinants influencing auto parts companies’ dependency on auto manufacturers and identifying boundary conditions that can mitigate this dependency.
