Abstract
This study aims to investigate analyst coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic period and examines the moderating effect of corporate investments on analyst coverage with the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 pandemic has increased the uncertainty over the economy throughout production, consumption, and employment. With the COVID-19 crisis, analyst coverage has significantly decreased, which implies that the cost of providing earnings forecasts exceeds the demand for analysts’ private information from the financial market. Further, the decrease of analyst coverage is more pronounced for firms with larger investments in the prior year and for firms with higher exposure to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. While analyst coverage decreased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic on average, the earnings forecasting accuracy for firms with an increased number of analysts improved during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides novel evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the information environment by finding the decrease of analyst coverage in an attempt to provide accurate forecasts even for the smaller number of firms.
