Abstract
Objectives:The aims of this study are to investigate whether blood total antioxidant capacity(TAC) is decreased in dementia of the Alzheimer’s type(DAT), and to identify demographic and clinical factors related to TAC. Methods:Clinical assessments using the mini-mental state examination-Korean version(MMSE-K), clinical dementia rating(CDR), global deterioration scale(GDS), activities of daily living(ADL) and measurements of blood TAC using chemiluminescence were performed in 58 normal aged controls(17 males and 41 females) and 65(19 males and 46 females) patients with DAT. Results:1) The mean(±S.D.) blood TAC of the patients(1.7843±0.1366mmol/L) was significantly lower than that of normal aged controls(1.9267±0.1918mmol/L)(p<0.001). 2) In normal aged controls, blood TAC had negative rank correlation with age(ρ=-0.399, p<0.005), and had positive rank correlation with education level(ρ=0.547, p<0.001) and MMSE-K scores(ρ=0.925, p<0.001). In patients with DAT, blood TAC showed no rank correlation with those variables except MMSE-K scores(ρ=0.482, p<0.001). Conclusion:To measure blood TAC, a kind of peripheral marker of oxidative stress, seems to be useful to evaluate cognitive change and to speculate related pathophysiology.
