Abstract

The isolation of the individual in the family or in the society and resulting necessity for Self-affirmation by personal decision are the important thematic factors both uniting and separating the worlds of Kleist and Kafka. Both authors concentrate on moments of crisis and decision of their protagonists in their works. The claims of critics that Kafka is significantly less optimistic than Kleist, finally have a share in the view that there are few similarities between these two authors. Kafka had indeed identified Kleist's characters with his own characters, but he could find no strength to break out of the confusion and hesitation of the characters in his literary world. In the works of Kafka are a defeatism and sense of futility that question the freedom of man's will. Kafka seems to be far removed from the spirit of Kleist's characters despite his enthusiasm for the world of Kleist, for he rejects the very premise upon which they stand, namely, the ability to exercise one's will and discover one's own capacities in the process. In two brief works as『Entschlüsse』 and 『Der plötzliche Spaziergang』(1913) Kafka summarizes what he longs for and simultaneously often finds unreachable in reality. In other words he expresses here definitively the hope that he found in Kleist. and the fear that the solutions of Kleist, which he himself longed for, are no longer available in his world. Kafka admires the ability of Kleist's heroes to act independently of family and society, the strength of Selbst-affirmation evolving from the struggles of his heroes. But Kafka ist skeptical at the same time, whether this ability can be realized.
