Abstract

This thesis is a study of the death poetry left by ancient Chinese women in times of disaster and crisis. These works contain moments of humiliation and how difficult and barren it was to live as a woman under the male-centered social construction. I briefly reviewed the research status and creative background of the death poetry by ancient Chinese writers. Then, I considered the contents of death poetry and the literary significance of the work. Most of the death poetry written by ancient Chinese women addressed the subject of chastity. The works, which addressed violence at times, expressed their situation that they left with no choice but choosing death over life. But the writers also articulated the energy of resistance to the hierarchical order and dealt with a person’s everyday life as women which was not mentioned from the literary works of male authors. It used to be absolutely not possible for women to ‘speak up’ but just sit back and listen. It would seem to be the time reforming from passive womanhood to active. Therefore, It is a meaningful approach to translate the values of death poetry with a feminine point of view.
