Abstract
For Michel Tournier, who grew up in the Christian tradition, the Bible is the foundation of his literary universe and a source of artistic inspiration. Since his first novel, almost all of his books abound in biblical references. In this study, we examine how the author rewrites the Genesis myth in his own text, “La famille Adam”. Certainly, Tournier borrows characters, plots, key events, and motifs from the Bible, but they undergo a radical transformation under his pen. As a result, we meet unfamiliar figures of familiar characters in his rewritten version of Genesis: the androgynous Adam and Jehovah, jealous of his grandson. We no longer find there either absolutely evil Cain or absolutely good Abel. Tournier also likes to play with themes or concepts paired by opposition. In his tale, he sets up a kind of opposition system. In particular, the nomadic Abel opposes the sedentary Cain. The conflict between the two brothers triggers the famous drama, but eventually subsides, giving way to the image of fusion and union. This study seeks to determine what the author is trying to convey by rewriting the most sacred story in the most audacious way, and to understand his philosophy of the incessant rewriting of myths.
