쇼펜하우어와 오닐의 비극관은 인간 의지의 비극성을 강조한다는 점에서 유사하다. 쇼펜 하우어의 비극관에서 의지는 고통의 근원이며, 의지를 초월하려는 노력은 비극의 필연적 요 소로 작용한다. 그의 철학에서 세계는 ‘의지’에 의해 움직이며, 인간은 욕망과 의지에 얽매여 끊임없이 고통을 경험한다. 이 과정에서 인간은 의지의 굴레에서 벗어나는 과정, 즉 체념을 경험한다. 체념은 삶에 대한 집착과 의지를 내려놓은, 고통을 통한 인식의 과정이며 특히 죽 음에 임박한 순간에 비로소 완전한 해방과 평온을 경험한다. 오닐의 『털복숭이 원숭이』에 서 양크는 처음에는 사회적 위치와 정체성을 증명하려는 강한 의지를 보였으나, 그의 반복적 인 좌절과 고뇌가 극에 달할 때 그는 모든 의지를 포기하고 죽음을 맞이하게 된다. 이는 양크 가 자신의 존재에 대한 강렬한 의욕에서 출발하여, 점차 고뇌 속에서 쇼펜하우어적 체념을 경험하고, 삶의 의지로부터 벗어나 죽음을 통해 고통으로부터 해방되는 과정을 보여준다. 따 라서 양크의 죽음은 비극적이면서도, 삶에 대한 의지와 그로 인한 고통이 동시에 종결되는 체념의 완성을 상징하며, 쇼펜하우어의 철학적 사유가 오닐의 작품에 깊이 반영된 것으로 이 해될 수 있다.
Abstract
Schopenhauer and O’Neill’s views on tragedy are similar in that they both emphasize the tragic nature of human will. In Schopenhauer’s perspective on tragedy, the will is the root of suffering, and the effort to transcend the will functions as an essential element of tragedy. According to his philosophy, the world is driven by ‘will,’ and humans, bound by desires and will, experience constant suffering. Through this process, humans undergo a release from the shackles of will—an experience of renunciation. Renunciation involves letting go of attachment to life and the will, and is a process of recognition through suffering, leading to complete liberation and serenity, particularly in the face of death. In O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape, Yank initially displays a strong will to prove his social position and identity. However, as his repeated frustrations and anguish reach their peak, he ultimately abandons all will and meets his death. This depicts Yank’s journey from an intense desire to assert his existence to gradually experiencing Schopenhauerian renunciation amidst torment, and finally escaping the will to live, finding liberation from suffering through death. Thus, Yank’s death is both tragic and emblematic of the culmination of renunciation, where the will to live and the suffering it entails are simultaneously brought to an end. This signifies that Schopenhauer’s philosophical reasoning is deeply reflected in O’Neill’s work.
