Abstract

This study explores Virginia Woolf’s androgyny which was discussed in her prestigious essay A Room of One’s Own not as an idea of feminism or simply a male and female coexistence but as a literary theory. This kind of viewpoint will provide a new way of understanding Woolf’s androgyny which has been mostly discussed in terms of feminism. As a result, androgyny will be redefined as an aesthetic term to embed the organic unity of literature and the integrity of the reading experience. The article’s main arguments can be summarized in three parts. First, this article finds an analogy between Woolf’s androgyny and T.S. Eliot’s impersonal art theory; for both conceptualizations presume intertextuality in which the contextual framework becomes the horizon for finding meaning in the text, particularly in its relationship to the texts which have preceded. Second, it examines A Room of One’s Own in which I argue how female authors in the history of English literature have retained a tradition of camouflaged and interrupted writing. I discuss how Woolf’s insistence on “a lack of tradition” for women writers implies, in actuality, “a full of tradition.” Third, it examines how Woolf’s notion of androgyny as the organic unity of literature can be demonstrated through the intertextual examples of marriage topics in George Eliot’s Middlemarch and Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. This article concludes that Woolf’s notion of androgyny is an equivalent concept to Roland Barthes’ writerly text which produces meaning through readers’ active involvement in the relationship between text and author which is connected to Barthes’ other famous notion of ‘the death of the author.’
