Abstract

Ceux qui partent à l’aventure is a play with a theme of mountain hiking. In this work, as in many other works created by Noëlle Renaude, all theatrical symbols and elements are missing, making it appear on the surface as a simple play text. However, when a narrator among the mountain-bound crowd starts telling the story of ‘a certain man vanished leaving only a will after going bankrupt’, the play starts to develop into a double structure that encompasses ‘a play within a play’. The names of the speakers in the play are concealed and thus the play takes on a complex structure wherein it is difficult to fine and follow the clues. This ‘incident’ from the past intrudes upon the present of the mountain hikers. Sometimes two parallel scenes from the present appear simultaneously causing time to ‘clash’ with itself and get out of order. A place the ‘walkers’ cannot arrive at is re-enacted on the stage. The present scene is divided up according to the theatrical strategy and a play on the arrangement of letters in some words. Then a pictogramme replaces a given scene. Along with disorganized time, theatrical space is twisted, resulting in chaos. But the reader can still take advantage of the unique writing style of Renaude and the unexpected literary devices found in various parts of the play as a ‘compass’ and draw the geography of the work and participate in the mountain hiking and at last conclude the journey to find order in the ‘Chaosmos’.
