Abstract
After COVID-19 forced people around the world into a kind of ‘confinement’, Albert Camus’s The Plague, published in 1947, became a global bestseller. The lives of modern people were completely shaken when the freedoms they had taken for granted were restricted due to the pandemic, and this is why attention was focused on Camus's novel, which seemed to have predicted this situation a long time ago. The plague, which killed nearly 100 million people in Europe in the mid-14th century, was the greatest plague in human history. Therefore, Camus would have viewed the plague as the most appropriate historical example to express his central ideas. Among Camus' spiritual teachers, the philosopher who deserves the most attention is Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche holds a special place in Camus. It is a widely known fact that Camus's philosophy of absurdity and rebellion originated from Nietzsche's nihilism. For this reason, the influence of Nietzsche can be discussed in all of Camus' works, including essays, novels, and plays, without exception. However, Camus did not just blindly accept Nietzsche's ideas, but also built his own world by criticizing and overcoming Nietzsche. One of them is atheistic humanism. It is Nietzsche's nihilism, that is, Camus's 'humanism', which built the earthly world from the 'death of God'. Therefore, this paper is a comparative literary study that examines how atheism, influenced by Nietzsche's philosophy, is developed and implemented into atheistic humanism through The Plague.
