Abstract

According to the guidelines on research misconduct applied by domestic and foreign universities, plagiarism is considered one of the representative research misconducts along with fabrication and falsification. Although there has been a growing interest in research ethics and research ethics education to prevent research misconduct has continued, controversy over plagiarism has persisted. The results of a survey of research ethics activities at domestic universities over the past three years suggest that the Korean academic community should strive to prevent plagiarism considering the high frequency of plagiarism. Plagiarism is constituted when one’s research contents are posed as belonging to someone else by a third party, and is typically a case in which the source is not indicated when it is absolutely necessary. However, researchers are suspected of plagiarism because they do not know or intentionally omit cases where the source must be attributed. Therefore, this paper focused on two points to prevent plagiarism based on a correct understanding of plagiarism. First, this paper looked at the meaning, characteristics, types of plagiarism and the differences between plagiarism and copyright infringement. Second, it was designed to resolve ignorance and misunderstanding of plagiarism by providing answers to plagiarism-related questions frequently raised by researchers.
