초록

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the motif of stomach troubles, often appearing in Cheongjun Lee's novels, and to uncover its symbolic implication and leitmotif. Cheongjun Lee frequently depicted the characters who show mental or physical symptoms in daily life; among others, the stomachache, which was portrayed in Discharge from the Hospital, The Tuner, and Practice of Returning Home, goes beyond a mere symptom of illness. It is a sign of revealing an ideal of the world and the self. In addition, the affected area does not just stand for conflicts with the world, but turns into a medium that helps to confirm one's existence and to understand the world and others. It is the relational eyes that enable this transformation. A male protagonist feels fear and anxiety by invisible oppressive eyes or others' eyes; on the other hand, he chases down the affected area via others' eyes. The focal narrator also turns his eyes to others, by which he broadens the width of his understanding of others and the world. Ultimately, the symptomatic affected part and the eyes gazing at it illustrate the world view of Lee's novels.
