1851년 세계 최초의 세계박람회인 런던 세계박람회(The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations)가 시작된 후 42년만인 1893년 콜럼비아 세계박람회(Chicago Columbian World's Exposition)에 조선은 처음 출품하였다 출품하게 된 동기는 미국의 초빙과 알렌(Horace N. Allen)의 권고가 주효하여 출품하였으나 조미조약 이후 李鴻章의 屬邦論에서 벗어나려는 고종의 의지 때문이었다. 그래서 鄭敬源을 出品大員으로 삼아 隨員 安琪善과 崔文鉉, 전통음악인 10명 도합 13명을 세계박람회가 열린 시카고에 파견하였다. 세계박람회 기간 동안 조선 전시실을 찾아온 사람은 많았다. 朴鎔奎 徐丙圭는 자원하여 조선 전시실에 와서 일을 하였고 佐翁 尹致昊는 조선 전시관의 전시물을 보고 악평하였다. 악평을 한 가장 중요한 원인은 정경원과 개인적인 사이가 좋지 못하였기 때문이었다. 조선 전시실에 대한 규모문제는 정경원의 1893년 12월 18일자 乾淸宮에서 행한 보고에 근거를 둔 6～7간설, 주조선 미국공사관 서기관 알렌이 1892년콜럼비아 세계박람회 외국담당 책임자 Fearn에게 보낸 문서에 근거를 둔 400ft2설이 있을 수 있으나 조선 전시실 사진 실측, 제품 전시관 평면도 및 조선 전시실 평면도 실측을 통하면 대지 43,3㎡, 전시실 32,4㎡설이 확인된다. 전시실을 건축한 기간은 1892～93년간이었다. 건축의 공로자는 알렌과 주미조선공사관 대리공사 李采淵이었다. $500.00 들여 지어진 전시실에 5종의 물품을 전시하였다. 벤크로프트(Herbert Howe Bancroft)는 조선의 전시품은 장남감 같다고 악평하였으나 관람인이 너무 많아 일일이 설명을 할 수가 없어서 물건에 설명서를 부쳐 대응할 정도라고 하였다.콜럼비아 세계박람회가 끝난 다음해 불이 나서 제품전시관이 파괴될적에 조선 전시실도 같이 소실되고 말았다. 그러나 남아 이었던 물건들은 시카고 과학산업박물관(Museum of Science and Industry)을 거쳐 필드 박물관(Field Museum)에 당시의 유품이 보관되어 있다.
Abstract
London World Exposition(The Great Exposition) was opened on the Hyde Park in 1851. It was opened by the support of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. The Chicago Columbian World's Exposition was opened at the shore of Lake Michigan. at 42 years after open day of Great Exposition, Chosen(Korea) participated at the Expo on the Korean History at first. Chosen Commissioner was Chung Kyung Wan, and the suites were Choai Mun Hyun and An Ki Sun. 10 Chosen traditional musicians participated at the expo with them also. They participated in the opening day with Chosen Counseller Ye Sung Soo of Chosen Legation in Washington. They heard President Grover Cleveland's speech, and reading the "Prophecy" by William A. Crofft.Chosen constructed the pavilion in the Manufactures and Art Building. It located B sections in it. It was a pavilion facing the west in it. The present place is the North on the South Lagoon along Hayes Dr near the South shore of the East Lagoon.As a result of my studing Chosen Pavilion, I found that I could recover Chosen Pavilion by the Ground Plan of Manufactures and Art Building, Map of Columbian World's Exposition, the Photo of Chosen Pavilion. The result was follow :The area of ground of Chosen Pavilion was 43,3m The width of Pavilion was 3,5m, the length was 9,3m, and the height was 10m. The area of Pavilion was 32,4m2.By Chong Kyung Wan Papers, Chosen Pavilion were constructed by Horace N. Allen and Ye Chai Yun between 1892-93.,
