Abstract

Different from other noblemen in the late Chosun Dynasty(朝鮮王朝) who studied Sa(辭) or Bu(賦) to rise in the world and gain fame through passing the state examination, Lee-ok(李鈺) embodied his own original artistic world with various materials accessible in the ordinary life and imagination. Because it embodies the form and contents of things with careful observation of the arrangement, Bu naturally has a brilliant and beautiful style. Because of these characteristics, Bu can't be written without acquiring the highly advanced creative techniques like repetition, enumeration and antithesis in expressing the main idea or technique. It is the characteristic of Lee-ok's Bu that he used free phrasal works not bound in regular forms. Based on the basic forms, he achieved his own original Bu adding the prosaic elements searching for various changes. Also, he preferred even phrases to odd phrases to express more stable and sublime feelings. Moreover, he often used the techniques such as repetition(反復), enumeration(列擧) and antithesis to create splendid(對偶), beautiful Bu. Generally, these methods were not used separately, but simultaneously or line by line and formed parallel phrases(竝行句文). Through these processes, Lee-ok revealed his well-informed and broad vision and showed off poetic skills. He criticized on the world directly or objectified his dissatisfaction of the world in his mind through the dialogue form. On the other hand, he expressed his own feeling directly in the form of narration. Lee-ok represented his hidden dissatisfaction that he couldn't achieve his goal because of the inappropriate times and showed off his poetic skills with splendid and magnificent styles. It also indicates that he wanted to enter office as a nobleman until the last phase of his life.
