영화 <설국열차>와 봉준호의 서사전략: 알레고리적 성향을 가진 인물 캐릭터의 수사학

이 논문은 봉준호 감독의 첫 번째 글로벌 프로젝트로 추진되었던 영화 <설국열차>를 텍스트로 하고 있다. 그리고 이 영화 속 주요 등장인물들의 캐릭터를 심층 독서함으로써 이야기꾼 봉준호의 서사변형 전략을 검증하고 그것이 발현하는 상징성과 효용성, 가치를 논증하고 있다. 봉준호의 영화들에서 인물들이 갖는 알레고리적 상징성과 캐릭터의 다중 복합적 속성이야말로 그가 구사하는 서사전략의 핵심이다. 그의 영화들 중에서 인물들이 가진 극적 성격과 그가 일으키는 사건들을 제대로 보지 않고 읽지 않는다면 알맹이 빠진 주변 이야기가 될 뿐이다. 따라서 이 논의에서 나는 주요 인물들이 벌이는 일련의 사건들과 그들의 다중성을 세밀하게 살펴보았다. 특히 ‘커티스’와 ‘남궁민수’라고 하는 두 핵심 인물의 성격과 역할은, 누가/어떤 위치나 관점에서 접근하느냐에 따라 영화가 말하고자 하는 이야기의 본질 자체가 완전히 달라질 수 있도록 치밀하게 설계돼 있다. 표면적인 극적 상황의 전개과정에서 ‘커티스’는 의심의 여지가 없는 주인공이다. 그러나 텍스트의 심충구조 속에서, 그는 다만 주인공의 도우미일 뿐이다. 이 영화의 진정한 주인공은 바로 ‘남궁민수’이다. 그는 아무런 비전과 대안이 없이 단지 체제 유지와 보전에만 급급한 상태에 처해 있는 ‘설국열차’의 본질을 냉철하게 인식하고 있는 단 한 사람이다. 그는 현 상태와 체제로는 외부 환경의 급변에 대응하지 못하고 모두가 공멸할 수밖에 없다는 생각에 열차의 문을 폭파하고 밖으로 뛰쳐나가려 하는 진정한 혁명가이기 때문이다. 이 밖에 ‘윌포드’와 ‘길리엄’, ‘메이슨’과 ‘요나’ 등, 주요 인물들의 캐릭터 속에도 봉준호는 논쟁이 될 만 한 여러 요소들을 다층적으로 심어 놓고 있다. 이러한 전략을 통해, 그는 누구나 쉽게 이해하고 수용할 수 있는 겉 이야기 속에 자신이 진짜로 하고 싶은 속 이야기를 심어 놓는다. 영화 <설국열차>에서도 그만의 특별한 수사학을 계속해서 이어가고, 또 보여주고 있음을 우리는 명백히 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper is based on the film <Snowpiercer> which was pursued as the first global project of director Bong Joon-Ho. Also, the in-depth personalities of the characters are read so the modified narration strategies of the storyteller Bong Joon-Ho is investigated, and demonstrates the symbolization, effectiveness, and value that manifests. The allegoric symbolism and multiple complex properties of the characters in Bong Joon-Ho’s movies are indeed the core of the narrative strategy he commands. If you do not read carefully about dramatic nature of the characters, and the series of events those characters make, it would only be an unsubstantial peripheral story. Therefore in this debate, I closely observed the series of events the characters make, and the multiplicity of the characters. In particular, the personalities and roles of the two core characters “Curtis” and “Nam-Goong-Min-Soo”, is carefully designed so the essence of the narrative that the movie wants to tell can change completely depending on approaching who/which point of view. “Curtis” is the main character without a doubt, in the development of the surface structure. However, inside the deep structure of the text, he is only a helper of the true main character. It is “Nam-Goong-Min-Soo”. He is the only person who realistically perceives the nature of the “Snowpiercer” which is in the state of absolutely no vision and alternative, only striving after maintenance and preservation of the system. He is the true revolutionist with the thought that with the current state and system, correspondence to the sudden change in outer environment would be impossible and everyone would codestruct, therefore he tries to blow up the doors of the train and tries to storm out to the outside world. In addition, also in the primary characters like “Wilford”, “Gilliam”, “Mason” and “Jonah”, Bong Joon-Ho has planted several disputable issues in multiple layers. Through strategies like these, he plants the real interior story he wants to tell inside outer stories which everyone can understand and accommodate. In <Snowpiercer>, also, we can clearly identify he has been continuing and showing his special rhetoric.
