조지훈은 한국의 그 어느 시인보다도 ‘꽃’을 즐겨 노래한 시인이다. 우리는 시인이 관조하는 의식과 세계 도처에서 시인 스스로가 즐겨 ‘꽃’들과 꿈꾸며 그들과 이야기를 주고받는 것을 목격할 수 있다. 때로는 인간보다 더욱 친밀한 상대가 되어 ‘꽃’들은 시인의 의식 속에 자연스럽게 하나로 존재한다. 이와 같이 조지훈의 시세계속에 만개하고 있는 ‘꽃’은 조지훈 자신이 의식하였든 또는 의식하지 못하였든 일련의 시작품속에 연계적으로 사용되어 시인의 독창적인 시적 언어로 표상되고 있다. 이 논문은 조지훈 시에 나타난 꽃의 의미를 규명하기 위한 논문이다. 이 논문에 사용된 텍스트로는 『趙芝薰詩選』을 택하였다. 조지훈의 상상력이 드러내 보이는 ‘꽃’의 이미지는 시인의 자아인식에 따라 여러 형태로 변용되어 나타난다. 첫째, ‘꽃’은 먼저 소도구적 역할을 하면서 효과적인 배경이나 분위기를 연출하는 데 즐겨 사용된다. 둘째, '꽃'은 소도구적 기능에서 벗어나 시인의 의식체계를 반영하는 것으로 상징되고 있다. '꽃'은 조지훈에게 우주적 참 존재자로서 인식되어 신의 섭리와 무한한 생명의 신비를 상징하고 있으며, 시인의 절대적 구원으로서 표상되기도 하고, 영원한 자유를 상징하기도 한다. 셋째, ‘꽃’은 사랑을 상징하면서 조지훈은 아름다운 생명체로 귀향하는 인간성 회복의 불가결한 요소로서 파악하고 있다. 넷째, ‘꽃’은 우주질서를 대변하는 대상이다. ‘꽃’의 탄생과 죽음의 과정을 통해 조지훈은 생성, 소멸, 재창조의 순환구조를 우주질서의 대원리로 삼고 있다. 생물이 태어났다는 것은 이미 그것이 죽음의 일부에 들어 있다는 것이며, 또한 하나의 생명이 죽는다는 것은 다시 새롭게 태어난다는 것의 일부에 지나지 않는다는 뜻이다. 죽음은 모든 생물체에게 회피할 수 없는 생의 절대적 위협으로서 그리고 숙명적인 것으로서 다가온다. 그러나 우리가 죽음에의 선택이라는 결단을 스스로 내리게 될 때 죽음은 숙명적인 의미와는 전혀 다른 형태로 다가온다. 자유를 느끼게 하는 죽음, 그것은 죽음으로써 자유로움을 상기시키게 하는 죽음인 것이다. 왜냐하면 죽음 그 자체는 언제나 새로운 삶을 연속으로 해서 나타나는 현상이기 때문이다. 결론적으로 조지훈 시세계에 있어서 ‘꽃’은 시인 자신이며, 그의 영혼이기도 하다. 이러한 신성한 이미지의 꽃은 두 가지 요소를 항상 내포하고 있다. 하나는 영원을 추구하는 시적 표상으로서의 언어이고, 다른 하나는 인간과 사물에 대한 끝없는 그의 애정의 소산이다.
Abstract
Cho Ji Hoon is a poet who most used the word "flower" as an object in his poetry. We can very often find that he dreams of flowers in the world of his poetry. Sometimes, the poet and the flowers are naturally as one in the kind of place where he can feel the poetic imagination. Cho Ji Hoon employs the images of the flower as one of the most central symbols of nature manifesting itself implicitly and explicitly in his humanistic and unⅣersal ideas attained from his common transcendental insights. Having observed the flower as an analogy of the spiritual nature of man and the unⅣerse it became a representation of his unique poetic language. This paper studies the meaning of the flower of Cho Ji Hoon's poetics and analyzes the anthology of Cho Ji Hoon which features 70 poems that were published in 1956. In the anthology of Cho Ji Hoon, the images of the flower are depicted in various forms according to the poetic self of the writer. The first form is of the flower used as an ornament for the poetic background or for the poetic atmosphere. The second form is of the flower emerging from the poetic background, tending to provide the reflection of the poetic self. The poet portrays the flower as the symbolic vision of true ens, the providence of Heaven and the mysteries of the infinite life. Through the third form of the flower, its images as the main poetics in his literature, the poet projects the transcendental love of soul. Cho Ji Hoon realized that love is the only essential element to regain the human nature in its highest form. The flower in its fourth form is an object which represents the provision of nature. Cho Ji Hoon constantly pursued the poetics of death. But this death reminds us of the perfect freedom available for the flower. Through a flower's life, from its birth to its death, Cho Ji Hoon's poetry shows the recreation of the unⅣerse. In conclusion, the 'flower' represents Cho Ji Hoon himself, his anima, In addition such a sacred image in his 'flower' has two major factors. One is the intermediate beings who have influenced him to pursue eternity, and the other is his lifelong love for human beings and things.
